
ACT I

Buda Castle, Hungary
Princess Jadwiga, after coming back from Vienna,
is singing songs which she heard in Vienna.
Medieval music (interplay) with the current Viennese motives. Suddenly music
fades away and song Bogurodzica is heard from the
open window. Song becomes lauder and lauder and, after a while, fades away.
Princess Jadwiga tries to sing the melody of Bogurodzica. Motive of Viennese music 'comes back'. Jadwiga, dancing happily around, tries once more to sing
melody of Bogurodzica.
King
Louis's death
Princess Jadwiga is sitting very sad in her chamber room after
death of her father. Fanfares send the message to people about death of King
Louis. After a short break it can be heard the voices of cheering
people and at that time Queen Mother enters Jadwiga's
chamber. Queen Mother tells Jadwiga that her older
sister was announced as a King of Hungary. Jadwiga
tries to protests, because according to King Louis's will, She was to become
the King of Hungary. After a while, she gives up but continues her complaint
against Hungarian Nobles.
Princess Jadwiga in her chamber is informed that decision was made
that she will be a King of Poland. Jadwiga tries to
sing polish songs which she learn from her
grandmother Queen Elizabeth (sister of Polish King). Element of disturbance
is introduced by the troubadour song which says about barbaric life in Lithuania.
